Stornoway Historical Society was established in 1992 and has premises at Stornoway Town Hall where a regular series of exhibitions is presented. The Society hosts a winter series of lectures and publishes a number of books on local subjects as well as its own journal twice a year.  Its website covers many detailed topics relating to the town’s history.

The geographical areas covered by its research include Stornoway, Sandwick, Holm, Plasterfield, Steinish, Melbost, Branahuie, Laxdale, Marybank, Bennadrove, Newvalley, Arnish, Maryhill and Newmarket.
